the opportunity

Built in 1922, Bunce Hall is the oldest building on Rowan University’s Glassboro campus. KSS worked with Rowan to update 37,480 square feet of the 71,000-square-foot building to meet current and future needs of the University. These updates included the creation of flexible spaces, enhancements to College of Performing Arts spaces, new University Leadership Suites, and life safety and infrastructure upgrades.

Our Approach

Existing office space was transformed into five flexible spaces ranging from 700 to 1,200 square feet, all of which were equipped to accommodate active learning, lecture/training, assembly/presentation, and meeting.  Physical improvements to College of Performing Arts spaces facilitate program accreditation and attract new students and faculty. Enhancements include new flooring and finishes, house lighting, and waterproofing repairs in the black box theatre, new finishes and space configuration in the Lighting & Set Design Studio, new dance flooring and finishes in the Multipurpose Rehearsal & Instruction space; flexible, small-scale, gender-neutral dressing areas, finish upgrades to the green room, and restoration of historic chandeliers in the Tohill Theatre.

University Leadership Suites include new offices and conferencing areas for the Office of the President, Office of the Provost & Academic Affairs, Division of University Relations, Office of Government & External Relations, and Office of General Counsel. Centralized on the third floor, the suites provide modernized spaces for University leadership. The team also managed life safety and infrastructure upgrades, retiring underperforming systems to increase future space planning flexibility. This included an expanded sprinkler system serving levels two and three to provide a fully sprinklered building and a new fire alarm system for the entire building. IT infrastructure upgrades include new incoming service, three new IT rooms, and new distribution wiring across the building.
