The Opportunity

Inspired by the idea of a “luminous ensemble,” the new Pavilion at The College of New Jersey will provide students with an acoustically efficient environment that supports a full ensemble while ensuring functionality, comfort, and sound isolation. Located behind the music building and adjacent to the concert hall, the Pavilion is sited to allow for easy circulation between the three spaces to support students in their musical studies.

Our Approach

The overall design is intentionally simple and compact with the rehearsal space expressed as the primary volume and a subtle façade. The façade balances transparency and translucency—clear glazing allows daylight into the rehearsal space, while translucent panels allow the building to glow outward like a lantern without disrupting activities inside. Creating moments of visual connection, the windows offer glimpses between students, the ensemble, and the surrounding campus life. Behind, raised windows elevate the view, framing the trees and forest and offering another visual connection to nature while the dark metal cladding wraps over the roof and extends down toward the windows to bring the scale of the building to a more human level.
