the opportunity

Rutgers University—New Brunswick’s master plan aimed to create a comprehensive campus that elevates student experience and advances its educational mission. In line with these goals, Rutgers reimagined Administrative Services Building I into a streamlined location to support student needs—a ‘One Stop.’ A precedent for the typology, Rutgers’ One Stop is a singular destination for admissions, registrar, financial aid, residence life, and IT as well as a beacon for University identity.

our approach

The project repurposes an existing 50-year-old concrete structure. The entrance is flipped from its original location, where it was disengaged from campus, to form a new plaza which creates a hub where students can congregate while also improving flow to and from the adjacent Busch Student Center. A Rutgers-branded tower acts as a beacon, guiding students and visitors through the newly created plaza which ties together the existing building with the site topography. Located on the first floor, the One Stop is a welcoming, sleek space featuring self-service kiosks for check-in, consultation rooms, administrative support space, and lounge areas. The remainder of the building is dedicated to a variety of administrative support functions.

The design intentionally establishes view corridors to nature throughout the building via strategic transparencies at the end of all main hallways. Open collaborative spaces line the perimeter, allowing democratic access to daylight and views, while private offices are located inboard. The existing exit stair shaft in the building’s center is transformed into an open communicating stair accentuated by natural wood and playful accent lighting. Custom millwork, metal panel ceilings, and Rutgers branding reinforce University identity and create a cohesive experience across the building’s three floors.
