The Opportunity
The Oscar Devereaux Micheaux House (ODMH) reimagines a historic Newark landmark as a vibrant mixed-use destination that celebrates the city's creative legacy while expanding opportunities for entrepreneurship, housing, and community engagement. Developed by RyArMo – Uptown LLC, a Newark-based co-development joint venture, the project transforms the former home of pioneering filmmaker Oscar Micheaux into a catalyst for economic mobility, cultural expression, and neighborhood revitalization.
Our Approach
Inspired by Micheaux's entrepreneurial spirit and groundbreaking contributions to independent filmmaking, ODMH is designed to cultivate Newark's next generation of creators. Flexible production studios, collaborative coworking environments, and shared creative resources support filmmakers, digital content creators, artists, and entrepreneurs by providing professional spaces to create, produce, and grow their businesses. Purposefully designed to lower barriers to entry, the development fosters collaboration, mentorship, and innovation while strengthening Newark's creative economy. The mixed-use development also addresses the city's growing need for attainable housing through a collection of mixed-income workforce residences designed for young professionals, families, and working creatives. A majority of the homes will remain permanently affordable, ensuring long-term access to quality housing within Newark's transit-connected urban core. Shared amenities, including a rooftop terrace, community gathering spaces, and neighborhood-serving food and beverage offerings, create opportunities for residents, creators, and visitors to connect while reinforcing a vibrant, inclusive community. Environmental stewardship is woven throughout the project through sustainable design strategies that support long-term resilience. Green infrastructure, rainwater harvesting, electric vehicle charging, and high-performance building systems contribute to a healthier environment while enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. By integrating creative production, entrepreneurship, affordable housing, and community-centered gathering spaces within a culturally significant landmark, the Oscar Devereaux Micheaux House honors Newark's past while creating new opportunities for its future. More than a redevelopment project, it is an investment in the city's creative talent, entrepreneurial spirit, and enduring cultural identity.
